Pregnant Women and Swine Flu
Mariel Galarza
The University of Texas at El Paso

Pregnant women have always been recommended from doctors to take the flu shot and after the virus H1N1 started spreading, doctors also recommended all pregnant women to get the H1N1 vaccine. Many pregnant women concerned it might affect their health decided to get it, but reports started going out that women that had taken the shot had miscarriages, “In fact, the package inserts for the swine flu vaccines actually say that the safety of these vaccines for pregnant women has not been established. And miscarriage reports from pregnant women who have taken the H1N1 swine flu vaccine are starting to pour in from all over the nation.” (Mercola, 2009, para. #2) After this it was recommended for all people to avoid public places especially pregnant women and keep hygiene.
The credibility of this picture which is the ethos is shown by where the vaccine is taking place and also the fact that her belly is showing as a pregnant women’s would. The room they are in seems like a clinic or hospital and the person giving her the vaccine is wearing gloves which shows it is been given by a health care professional like a nurse or doctor. Also, the person giving her the shot is wearing a watch so that shows that it must be a nurse or doctor.
Logos was used with them using pregnant women and also the way her hair is and what she is wearing. Her hair looks a little messy and she is dressed in casual clothes something that someone would wear if they were sick. Her make-up does not look done, her eyeliner looks smeared. She is slouching, her body language also shows in a way that she is not feeling well.
Her face expresses a lot of emotions she has a worried face and seems concerned about something. She shows some kind of fear and does not look like she is healthy. The way she is looking at the doctor or nurse is like she is not sure about what she is doing, she also looks in pain. Expressions in people’s faces say a lot about the emotion they have.
This image conveys that pregnant women should get vaccinated with the swine flu shot to protect them. Especially with the way the image is set-up it shows that she is getting the shot from a health care professional. This picture would motivate a lot of pregnant women to go get vaccinated because they are seeing someone that is in their position going to get a shot.
